Take care to use the appropriate inversions of these chords for proper voice leading. In the key of F, the iii chord is Am. The note P5 up from A is E, which makes the E7 chord the V7/iii chord in the key of F major. Similarly, A7 is the V7/vi, D7 the V7/ii, and G7 is the V7/V chord.

In a seventh chord, there are three possible inversions: the root position, the first inversion, and the second inversion. In root position, the root of the chord is the lowest note and the other notes of the chord are stacked above it.

Dominant seventh chords are often built on the fifth scale degree (or dominant) of a key. For instance, in the C major scale, G is the fifth note of the scale, and the seventh chord built on G is the dominant seventh chord, G 7 (shown above). In this chord, F is a minor seventh above G.

The V 7 chord has three inversions: V, V, and V 2. When using a dominant seventh chord in inversion, usually all four notes are present and there are no doubled notes. The V chord has ti (the third of the chord) in the bass.
